How to Prepare for your LVN CEU

When it's time to renew your nursing license, it's important to make sure you're prepared for the process. You don't want anything to take you by surprise, especially at the last minute, and you want to make sure that you have all the answers you need before it gets too close to the deadline. Renewing your nursing license is not something you want to take any chances on, after all.

Do your research

Gathering knowledge is one of the best ways you can help yourself prepare for your LVN CEU requirements. It can be time consuming, but when you go into the process of renewing your license with all your questions answered, it goes much more smoothly. A lot of your questions can be answered online.

You can contact your state licensing board for up to date information about the relicensing process. It's their job to set the procedures to ensure that nurses are highly qualified, so they will be able to answer all of your questions easily. You may also be able to get good information from your academic advisor at nursing school. Nursing schools need to stay on top of relicensing information, as well, so they can be sure they prepare nursing students for a career in the healthcare field. Your employer may also be able to answer your questions.

Consider expanding your skills

Once you find out what courses you can take to fulfill your LVN CEU requirements, think about the long term aspect of your career. Is there a course you can take that would not only be beneficial to your current nursing position, but would expand your skill set to make you more valuable, or open you up to more options in your career? You can also consider taking a course in something that's interesting to you, or something you've always wanted to learn more about. You can use your CEUs as an opportunity instead of thinking of it only as a requirement that has to be fulfilled.

Treat your LVN CEUs the same as nursing school

The knowledge you gain in your CEUs is just as important as the knowledge you gained throughout nursing school. Even if you're refreshing techniques you already know and use every day, it's important to treat your CEU requirements the same way you would treat the nursing classes you took to get your degree. These are not courses that you can blow off or "skate by" in. Your state licensing board wouldn't require CEUs if they weren't important, so you have to treat them as important, too. You should put as much effort and dedication into them as you would any of your nursing classes. Even though you have a license and you're using the courses to renew it, you can't work in the healthcare field as a nurse without CEUs.

Some people may describe them as annoying, while others may feel LVN CEU requirements are unnecessary. Regardless, they are required, and if you take the time to prepare for them, it will make the whole process go much more smoothly. Make sure you do all the research you can ahead of time, carefully consider the courses you plan to take for your requirements, and be sure to treat your CEUs just as importantly as any other nursing courses you've ever taken. The more preparation you do, the less likely you'll be to encounter any surprises and complications at the last minute that could prevent you from renewing your nursing license.
